Local Number Portability Allows You to Finally Switch Cellphone Carriers
and Take Your Phone Number With You
The Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association (CWTA) recently announced the removal of one of the biggest obstacles to Canadians who aren't happy with their cellphone service: the introduction of Local Number Portability. If you're one of the many wireless subscribers who endure dissatisfaction with your carrier just to keep your phone number, you may finally be in a position to reassess your options.
Local Number Portability enables Canada's cellphone users to keep their phone
number when changing service providers. Last December, the CWTA began its
implementation of the measure by ordering the country's major wireless carriers
to present the option of phone number 'port out' by March 14, 2007 within most regions of Canada. This means that this year, Canada's wireless subscribers will have the ability to change carriers and take their phone number with them. Consumers will also be able to keep the same phone number when transferring their landline phone service to wireless service.
LOCAL NUMBER PORTABILITY AS OF MARCH 2007

Starting March 14th (in most areas), you will be able to keep your phone number while switching wireless service providers. So if keeping your phone number has been your only reason for remaining with your current provider, you are finally able to reconsider your options.

What is local number portability?
Local Number Portability enables Canada's wireless phone subscribers to retain
their phone number when changing service providers. This is similar to the
system which is currently in place for home and business numbers. The country's major wireless carriers will be giving their customers the option of phone number 'port out' by March 14, 2007 (in most areas).
